Western Australia’s energy industry has undergone significant transformation.
Its oil and gas development and export sector continues to enjoy unprecedented growth, and gas has become a major source of energy in the State.
The reform of the State’s electricity sector including the establishment of a wholesale market and the disaggregation of Western Power, has greatly increased competition.
The energy sector faces substantial challenges, including climate change mitigation measures such as a proposed carbon pricing regime and active encouragement of renewable energy, and the impact on businesses and households of rising energy costs.
Western Australia will continue to experience a significant growth in energy demand, placing pressure on energy sources and infrastructure, and necessitating attention to improving energy efficiency.
The Office of Energy is leading the
Strategic Energy Initiative Energy2031 which will provide a policy and regulatory framework to lead and guide our energy markets and focus on maintaining secure, reliable, competitive and cleaner energy for the future.
The Office of Energy provides energy policy advice to Government and to the energy industry, through its major projects, stakeholder engagement, policy and regulatory development and review of energy industry information.
