Authorisation by the Coordinator of Energy is no longer required for new gas undertakings. Section 55 of the Energy Operators (Powers) Act 1979 was repealed by Energy Operators (Powers) Amendment Act 2006, which was given Royal Assent on 5 May 2006.
Any gas pipeline system operated at a pressure of 1.9 MPa and above requires a petroleum pipeline licence, granted under the provisions of the Petroleum Pipelines Act 1969, and administered by the Department of Industry and Resources.
Please note that the design, construction, operation and maintenance of gas facilities will need to comply with statutory technical and safety requirements of the Gas Standards Act 1972, as well as regulations under that Act, if applicable.
Further information on statutory technical and safety requirements may be obtained from the Energy Safety Division of the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection.
