

The requirement for proponents to obtain the approval of the Coordinator of Energy for any new power station, transmission system or interconnection of a power station to a distribution system of Western Power or of a supply authority has ceased, with the repeal of Section 7 of the Electricity Act 1945.
This is in recognition that the licensing of proponents now occurs under Part 2 of the Electricity Industry Act 2004. The Economic Regulation Authority (ERA) is responsible for the administration of the electricity licence framework.
Under this new framework, proponents are required to obtain a generation, transmission, distribution, retail or an integrated regional licence from the ERA. The Governor may also make an order exempting the requirement for a licence. The licence framework itself also provides for specific exemptions in self supply situations.
