The retail electricity market in Western Australia has been progressively opened to competition since 1999.

From 1 January 2005, all electricity customers consuming more than 50 megawatt hours (MWh) per annum, or 137 units per day on average, are eligible to choose and electricity retailer. As a guide, the consumption of 50 MWh per annum equates to an annual electricity bill of approximately $8,000 (depending on the tariff).

Competition between retailers is expected to place downward pressure on prices and provide customers with the opportunity to choose the price and service package that best suits their needs.

A brochure has been developed that outlines the changes to the retail electricity market and provides answers to frequently asked questions.
