The Office of Energy in conjunction with the Office of Water Regulation developed an education package on energy, water and wastewater efficiency. This education package is currently being used in 8 schools in the Kimberley region.
Going With the Flow: Mission Energy, Water and Wastewater is an initiative of the Aboriginal Communities Essential Services Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is a State and Commonwealth government interagency working group focusing on the delivery of essential services, including power and water, to Indigenous communities.
The package is designed primarily for students aged 8 to 10 and aims to offer learning value from Levels 1 to 3. The activities themselves have a high 'action' component with plenty of hands-on investigative work, a strong emphasis on students learning about their own environments and built in versatility to allow for different learning styles.
The education package's key message is Turn it Off. Three lively illustrated characters - Stewey, Bindi and Rusty who make up the 'Dingo Crew' appear throughout the student workbook adding interest to the students' discovery of:
The following eight schools in the Kimberley region including: Djarindjin/Lombadina Catholic School, Sacred Heart School (Beagle Bay), La Grange Community School (Bidyadanga), One Arm Point Remote Community School (Ardyaloon), Ngalangangpum Remote Community School (Warmun), St Josephs (Wyndham), and Wyndham and Halls Creek District High Schools will present the material to students. These schools were invited to teach the package as many of the students are from Indigenous communities which will experience changes in the delivery of their electricity from two Government programs: the Aboriginal and Remote Communities Power Supply Project and the Town Reserves Regularisation Program.
